Abstract

This resource is a three-volume, A-Z encyclopedia, with some 600 essay entries. Entries, ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 words, fall into four main categories. Each entry will be followed by a brief list of selected further readings (in the case of Person entries, a brief list of the person's works will also be included). The main categories are: Minority entries (1,000-5,000 words; approximately 300 entries), the heart of the encyclopedia, which will cover particular ethnic, religious, and other groups, their histories, culture, and current political situation. Topic entries (1,000-5,000 words; approximately 100 entries), which will focus on broader theoretical and philosophical issues; military, political, and social organizations; legal doctrines; and other concepts. Biographic entries (1,000-2,000 words; approximately 65 entries), which will include major figures--past and present--in minority movements around the world. Country entries (1,000-5,000 words; approximately 165 entries), which will provide a political, historical, and demographic overview of the world's countries, with an emphasis on ethnic and cultural divisions.

Abstract

What drives a state's choice to assimilate, accommodate or exclude ethnic groups within its territory? In this innovative work on the international politics of nation-building, Harris Mylonas argues that a state's nation-building policies toward non-core groups - individuals perceived as an ethnic group by the ruling elite of a state - are influenced by both its foreign policy goals and its relations with the external patrons of these groups. Through a detailed study of the Balkans, Mylonas shows that how a state treats a non-core group within its own borders is determined largely by whether the state's foreign policy is revisionist or cleaves to the international status quo, and whether it is allied or in rivalry with that group's external patrons. Mylonas injects international politics into the study of nation-building, building a bridge between international relations and the comparative politics of ethnicity and nationalism.
